Introducing DAS

DAS banner

I’m been quite quiet on the old blog recently as I’ve been beavering away at another project. And here it is.

DAS is a podcast made by myself, fellow TV producer Rubina Pabani, journalist Caroline Kent and Graphic designer Hanna Benjamin.

Our mission is this  …

As women in the media, we feel that it’s important [in a world where so much of what we hear and read is owned, shaped or otherwise influenced by or for men] that as many women as possible are able and excited to be included in conversations about their own lives.

And we think a good way to do that is by letting you be part of our [usually] private conversations.

Basically, we want to talk. We want to disagree and confront each other; we want to comfort and console each other. Female friendships are sacred and powerful and these sorts of exchanges have gone on since the dawn of time, but usually in private.

Now we want to unveil the conversation, to take what is usually private and make it public. To claim our place as narrators of our own stories, and share them with other women. To celebrate ourselves.

Make no mistake, every word that leaves our lips is a political statement.

Episode 1: DAS Body Shame

All of the DAS women have experienced shaming about their bodies. They have been told they are too fat, too thin, to ugly or even too sexy to be taken seriously. It feels like we can never get it right but what gives? Why are women’s bodies under so much scrutiny to be this perfect picture of beauty? What is beauty anyway? And do those so called “beautiful people” have an easier ride in life? We discuss all this and more. Warning: Tales of horrible ex boyfriends and slutty incidents.

Episode 2: DAS Pregnant

As a teenagers all the DAS women were told not to get pregnant. It will ruin your life. Society has taught us to put it off for as long as possible until we are where we are now …  entering our 30’s with no plans for children but alas for some of us our biological clocks have begun to tick. Has this culture of fear made us loose our nerve? Is there anything wrong with having a child young anyway? We discuss all of this as well as worrying about shitting ourselves when we give birth.

More podcasts to follow in the next month where we’ll be talking about violent music, mental health and whether the Internet is making us dumber. Any suggestions of topics you’d like to hear us cover please contact: Charlie@wearedas.com
